Hmmmm, This Was Interesting .

I had an interesting conversation early this morning with my hairdresser . I got there very early and the shop was rather quiet. I've had Olivia do my hair for years to the point that she has in fact told me that if she catches wind of my using "Box Color" on my hair, she will hunt me down.

Gaia Bless Her.

She said that she has been running and staying in shape, monitoring her BP...and yet just does not feel right . " Really ?" says Moi and we begin to chat. Nothing drastic or dramatic..just blah and then some. Then a light went off in my head..and I asked her age...BINGO !

Olivia darlin..you are perimenopasal .

Sleep disruptions, changes in eating, concentration, too hot or cold....weepy...tired..., over emotional, listless..yup.

At 47, this is rather normal for the most of us.

And yet....we don't talk about it.

Not to our doctors unless there is another issue at hand, not our husbands, not our mothers or sisters...rarely to our girlfriends.

Why ?

It's all a part of the normal life process. It is not a punishment or something dirty or shameful .

It just is.

We celebrate most facets of a young girls life.

Childhood birthday parties.

Teen years with proms or quinceneras .

High School graduations.

College acceptance.

First jobs...first apartments.

Engagements .

Marriages.

Birth of grandchildren.

Somewhere along the line, we have gotten the idea that menopause is the end of life, our vitality and sexuality and allure are over. We are now to go sit in the corner of the cave like :

Every old crone before us and wait to dispense our wisdom if any or to take over the care of the children and the other ill or infirm within our family/tribe.

BULL SHIT !

It is simply the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next.

It is also one of the most liberating things I have gone through.

I went into surgical menopause at the age of 31.

Thirty One.

No one at the time ( my doctor, the witch!) had bothered to tell me that since they were taking the only remaining non-functioning ovary that bippity boppity BOOM..menopause.

It was interesting at the age of 31.

It took a while to get the dosage and brand right for hormone replacement. And I can assure you, if I'd forgotten a dose, I knew it within hours. The mood swings were EPIC !

And yes...I had and still have hot flashes or as I call them " Power Surges."

I felt better after 2 1/2 weeks post surgery than I had in years.

I wanted to go dancing.

I was also by the way at 31 divorced and had by that point 5 miscarriages.

Two years later I met SU and we decided to marry.

Up until then I hadn't given it a lot of thought and to be honest , it did hurt a bit ( delayed reaction I believe) to realize that I was unable to have children with this new husband.

He, Bless him , was honest about the whole thing. He wasn't really up for Daddyhood. Really not interested and had no agenda or ticking clock.

We are superb cat parents, Godparents and Aunts and Uncles by the way .

Still, I am amazed at the feelings the word menopause generate within our gender.

When I hear of someone that I know who is having the hysterectomy or who now finds herself going down the on ramp of the Menopause Superhighway..if we are close ..I am the first one who picks up the phone and welcomes my new sister to the Sisterhood.

Ask me questions you don't want to ask a doctor or your mother.

Go ahead.

That's what friends are for.

Don't be ashamed of the changes your body goes through as we age.

It's really an adventure after all.

Bruce Of The Day ~ Happy Friday ~

Happy Friday kids.
It's been a weird week..not bad weird..just WTF a lot .
The Shell Open begins Monday , as does SU's vacation...a coinky dinky ? I think not. He has needed to take some time off for the longest time and since this is a local tourney, it is known as a religious high holy week in our house. Luckily I know a Grand High Poobah ( sans the hat ) so I scored some tickets for the man...Me such a good wifey .....snerk. We are so desperate for rain that I suspect that there are some counting on the tradition ...that it does in fact rain during the tourney...they are already mentioning drought here in Tejas on a regular basis on the news...sigh.
And....
Mrs. Crazy Cajun has finally embraced Aunt Pol's motto : " Jeebus H ..get out of the house and go play golf..you need money ?" Every Monday night SU goes over to make the family fortune at the Cajuns house playing cards. At some point , the Cajun's wife made that comment to SU along the lines of " Can't you get him out to play gold and get him the hell out of the house ?"
Welcome to my world honey.
We ( SU and I ) realized a long time ago..or to be honest I TOLD him when we first co-mingled personal laundry that I can't live in someones pocket..I need me time...alone time..girl time...you not working my last nerve time...and he gets that . He is the same way. Tonight as is his custom, he will go to the local beverage emporium ( ice house to the fellow Texans) and imbibe some oat soda ( name that movie..quick)...and I will do my thing at home.Hey..I'm being nice and I dont force him to watch " Say Yes To The Dress"..I have however corrupted him enough that he will watch " What Not To Wear." We could care less about basketball..You say basketball to me and one of three things will happen : I will either start to sing Cheech and Chongs " Basketball Jones..yeppers..that's stuck in your head now isn't it ? You're welcome. failing that , I will recall when I did watch basketball...involving either Phi Slamma Jamma or the Houston Comets.
And he was in a tiny fender bender with our girl.
He is fine.
The car has a couple of boo boos.
This is not acceptable to me..or him for that matter since we only have a smidge over 18 thousand miles on the girl. He was cut off by a man who thought he could make a left turn from the not the left turn lane lane. I do feel some sympathy for the man..he and his wife were down here at Anderson ( MD Anderson..and we all know that means cancer treatment) and the man was distracted because his supposed half hour appointment lasted damn near all day. Sir, you are retired military and should know that this is not a base and you are not being seen by some corpsman. Judging form the state of your car, this is not your first time at the rodeo either .If you are that distracted, pull over and figure out where the F you are going other than to meet my girl. Her Momma's not happy. His car paint is on the rim and there is a small dimple just in front of the front tire on my side..but..the gentleman has insurance ( USAA) and it will be fixed. I suggested that SU also make sure that he alignment is checked on ..just in case.
And everyone is grumpy at the office..grow a set and or get over it gang...seriously.
Have a good weekend.

Happy Birthday Pyro !

Happy Birthday to my wonderful Godson Pyro !
I am so impressed with the man that y0u have become . You are the best part of both your parents sweetie, goofy and pragmatic at the same time. You are a loyal friend and a good son ...and I am proud to be your Godmother.

Farewell To The Last Icon Of Her Age

I read this morning with great sadness , but little surprise that Miss Elizabeth Taylor passed away from congestive heart failure.
If the phrase " One of a kind" ever applied to any person, it was surely her. I think the thing that I admired the most about her was the fact that through all of the larger than life drama that she both endured and created...she always remained true to herself. She made mistakes as we all do and she both admitted them and laughed at them. Even when we thought her friendships and alliances had crossed over into the land of being too bizarre for words..she remained one of the things I value most.
She was loyal and constant to those she cared for.
Long before it became politically correct to do so, she championed AIDS awareness and was tireless in her crusade to change our ideas about what had been ignorantly called " Gay Cancer."
Yes, she lived larger than life..but then..why not ? Rather than flit from one.."liaison" to another..she married the men she fell in love with ..and while they uniformly ended in divorce , she made a legal and public commitment to those gentlemen .
Think about that for a minute in an age of throwaway marriages and quickie divorces.
She married and for the most part ended marriages with regret..not the sort of rancor we cannot escape in today's media.
She was both a lady and a great broad..and the ability to be both is a rare and unique gift.
I suspect Mr. Burton's long wait is over.
Your fans will miss you dear lady.

Happy Monday

I hope everyone had a good weekend...as for me..I semi lost my mind.
SU had to work and then was out and about so what the hell..lets clean carpets..sigh. And work in the garden....and then continue on yesterday...eeep.
And of course while he was out the Dyson started to act up...normal for the Casa. He gets home and takes it apart and sees what I mean by a loss of suction through the hose..ironic come to think of it given the companies advertising campain...anyhoo...we realize that we basically wore the damn thing out. Six cats will tend to do that, but we kept the Phantom and I doubt that we would spend the money on a Dyson again. Ideally, I would like a Rainbow, but Jeebus H..$$$$$$$ . I hear that the Bissell Dirt Devils are pretty good and I have been very happy with the Bissell line as far as the carpet cleaners go so we will see. Any one who has any experience with a Dirt Devil..please share, kthnzbai..lol.
The remainder of the Salvia and Petunias are in and it seems that 2 of the roses that we were considering pulling are in fact climbers ( I know dear, I know) and so a trellis-n we shall go .
And someone remind my that Bougainvillea's have large thorns...and are BITCH to dig up/out.
Have a great week.

This has made me laugh out loud all damn day.

On Monday night SU as is his custom goes over to the Crazy Cajun's to win the family fortune. Since I still had to doctor the triple batch of cookie dough ( yes, I had in fact lost my mind ) , I had some time to kill while waiting for the dough to warm up so I cruised the t slant v for something to watch that was not a rerun. Luckily for Moi, I ran across a 2 hour bio on Elton John....score...so I was a happy girl..Then there was a double dose of William Shatners Raw Nerve. Now this show I can take or leave , depending on his guest because well..it's Shatner..and other than when he is doing Denny Crane, a little of him goes a looong way .
Anyhoo..the second episode had Walter Koenig as the guest...oh F yeah. He was wonderful. He took some grownup responsibility for a lot of the animosity that is legend with Shatner and the show..and yet in a thoughtful way tore ol Bill a new one .
OUT FRIGGAN STANDING !
Have a great week.

Mondays

Yep...Mondays.

The weekend was a real mixed bag to use and old phrase...give yourself a cookie if you've ever used the term "mixed bag".

I got a call that I had missed earlier in the week and even though I have gotten used to having my phone on at all times when I am home ( as opposed to before because I HATED that POS phone..I lubs me mah new phone)..I also missed a text from Southside Johnny aka baby brother.I know , I know, I need to stop calling him baby brother...he's 50 and " baby brother" just sounds a bit skeevy at our age.

Anyhoo...it didn't take long to realize that something was wrong in the universe, there was a ripple in the force. Without going into too much detail because it is not my story to tell per se, the Step Momma has breast cancer and it is stage 4.

We all know there is no stage 5.

She had indicated around the holidays that she was about to begin a prolonged dance with chemo.

Then I found out that she has been on some sort of experimental treatment...I want to say that it is Hylaxon which is not the right word I know ..but it's the one that is stuck in my brain.

She sounded rather fragile when she and I spoke Friday...I know..duh....and so I didn't press her for details..this is her journey and not the moment to play Perry Mason with someone. I do know that she is fearful of pain, and after all aren't we all ? At her age, which is over 80, they may have collectively decided to try this course...I don't know...I do know that Southside and I are worried and our stepsister Miss Laura is on her way out there and will text data, info etc.

I debated on sharing this, but then after all , I realized that I have shared my MIL's journey and SU and I are now better versed in cancer than we ever hoped to be..so when I feel the need or the urge...I will share.

Again, we know that there is nothing that we can do and I for one am again reminded that this is not my mother. All we can do is give her and my step sibs all the love and support that we can muster..

SO me being me, when I am upset, I plant or bake.

I planted petunias, salvia, geraniums, yellow daisy sorta things, verbena..repotted some ..so the back is arrgh..and I have always made a commando run around the end of March or April..all things are possible when it approaches my birthday.

Then........even tho I was feeling puny with the sinus thing..dingbat here decided to make a TRIPLE batch of Grandma's oatmeal raisin cookies.

Hah!

Ok..rookie mistake..you really do need a full 6 cups of the rolled oats for a triple batch or they will spread too far..and the small ice cream scoop thingy is still to bit so it will be old school with 2 teaspoons. Luckily rather than futz with it last night, I put the dough in the fridge and will work the other 1/2 cup of oats into it and bake some of them off while he is at the Crazy Cajun's playing cards...

And the house is still a wreck...it was sort of a WTF weekend..Step Momma's situation sort of blew all hopes of concentrating on anything on my part...cause that's how I roll.

Have a good week.

And I have the clutter off the pass thru.
Ditto the dining room table .
And SU cleaned the shower .
ON a more serious note...keep a good thought, or a prayer out there for the folks in Japan. From what I have seen on this Tsunami on the news..they basically got their collective asses handed to them. So however you happen to roll , keep them in your hearts right now.

Dear Russell T. Davis ~ Now I'm pissed Off !

Dear Mr. Davis,

Somehow I missed the announcement that my beloved " Torchwood" would be moving to STARZ...which by the way I do not get nut have available via my local cable provider.

I forgave Owens demise, likewise with Tosh.

I have accepted Ianto's needless death and do not dwell on my beloved Captain Jack Harkness's heinous act .

I even forgave John Barrowmans idiotic stint on " Desperate Housewives."

Frankly, if Kyle Maclaughlin ( Muad'dib) couldn't lure me in to watch that tripe, Capt. Jack had no chance either.

But....

Now you are going to move " Torchwood " to Starz...why ?

Are you insane ?

What happened ?

BBCA not meet your price?

Dude, they are airing "X Files"...and they are re-runs even.

F You Mr. Davis...you just broke Aunty Pols and Miss Lisa's heart !

Now I have to approach SU about adding Starz...

Sigh.

Hmmmm

Edit: I am indulging in a pity party here so skip this if you want to ...I just need to vent.

I was talking to a co-worker today and it lead me to a couple of realizations.

She is one of the few here that actively read my blog and has given me some very good ideas about a few things. Betty Crocker and I have a mutual fear of "Mom Hair" , and a love of baking...well...duh !

I am frustrated more than usual by things that I can usually handle.

Clutter makes me f'g nuts.

And I have a shit load of it at the Casa right now.

Crap on the pass through. Crap on the dining room table. Crap on top of the file cabinet in the den. A desk full of papers and what nots in the same den. A guest bath cabinet in such disarray that I couldn't find more fixodent or deodorant. Ditto more or less for the built in china hutch in the dining room. A floor full of shoes in a pile in my closet. Dry cleaning taking up all the space on the two hanging rods in the garage. A shower that is toxic in its need to be cleaned , not to mention the floor fan in the bedroom or the comforters on the bed that need to be taken to the Laundromat. And so on.

Last night didn't help when a spill in one side of the pantry demanded we clean/clear off that shelf...nor did this morning when wubby diddums had another accident in the hallway . I had almost gotten my hopes up since it has been a week or so since the last one and we had gone back to the original formula Iams...nope....not happinin.

Part of the problem is that I let it slide for far too long because without the A/C I didn't have the energy to tackle it. Now before you go..um...Pol....it wasn't that bad...try living in Singapore and try running a bakery or a pottery kiln in 104 % humidity and then we will talk.

Other than a few days last October , I haven't taken any time off since we lost his mother in May of 2010.

Ten months ago.

My house is a disaster, my yard is a mess and I feel like I what to throw in the towel..except that the towel would land on the floor and add just one more bit to the clutter.

SU helps, but he is as tired as I am and frankly, he cares less about all of the above than I do....except that it is now working my last nerve. Hopefully I can hang in there till the first week of April when I can tear into some of it...yes kids....that is how I spend vacay. Either with Sistah or cleaning carpet and or house. I like the idea of starting something and seeing it through...and I am just enough OCD to need the control of the organizational parts of it.

Slowly but surely I will get there.

Tonight I will straighten out the floor of my closet and move a few of the winter weight jackets to the guest room closet with the rest of the heavier outfits.

NCIS is a re-run after all and I will feel better....baby steps...baby steps...It's no where near Hoarders or being a case of needing Intervention...it's just enough to irritate me and I like tidy...or at least clutter - less.

The weather was very weird this weekend, hot one day and cold the next.....or as I choose to call it.." Lets give the new A/C~heater a test run. Trust me, the gal pals on Facebook thought this was hilarious. The baby got washed and a couple of the sets of drapes ditto but the roses didn't get pulled and the shower still needs to be done. SU has golf next weekend so we shall see.
I hope that the Crazy Cajuns did okay this past weekend in NOLA...from the stuff that I saw on the Weather channel , it was dicier than usual..even for Mardi Gras...sheesh....how ya gonna get your drunk on in a tornado ?
Other than that..very dullish at the Casa...which reminds me...

Not a whole lot to report this week..other than SU has come up with yet another nickname for Andy. Bear in mind, I call him a few ( Sgt . Andy Panda Pants, Pooky, or Schmoopy) but MINE are cute. I have my doubts about Table Potato...just sayin.
It appears that we are finally going to get some rain and it may happen tonight. It is sorely needed and of course the car needs her bath( the inside can be done, right honey ?) and I really wanted to get some of the roses pulled that need to be replaced..oh well.

Muad'Deen

This may come as close to a perfect description of what some of my obsessions are as anything else.
Y'all know I love cooking, right now I am obsessed with a recipe for baked chocolate covered kettle corn with almonds...I really am. I am obsessed with cooking and baking. The FoodNetwork channel and Bravo's Top Chefs are our default go to settings. I want to have Alton Browns children. Food has crept into this blog in a way that I had not forseen...mwahahaha..diet..what diet ? I want to make that spicy pork loin this weekend ( pork loin is $3.49 per lb at Kroger honey..and I want that spicy rice too dagnabbit)..My eyes glaze over at the KA ( King Arthur) catalog every time it comes out, their site is bookmarked...as with most of the sites I visit, I am registered there and I archive recipes in their recipe boxes if that option is provided. I have made my own cookbook of sorts using a LARGE 3 ring binder..and believe that for me , my holy trinity is red wine, bacon and chocolate.
Just Sayin.
And then there is my all consuming love for Dune and Mr. Frank Herbert. I have the books, movies, and pc games. I have played with a group in a MPPBP ( Multi Player Play By Post) game on line for over 10 years with the same people. Moritani could be considered my legal last name in some circles and that's Duchess Moritani to you peasents ( I kid , I kid) . People know that Shai Halud or referencing Shaitan means something other than having to put me on a watch list. I support Brian Herbert and Kevin Andersons prequels to the death even amongst my peers, save the brains in the bucket /Cognitors and I mean really, that was a bit much even for Moi. I consider my friends my Seitch and I will give water for my tribe.....oops...too much there...no ? ...okay..
And Red Wine.
Nectar of the Gods.
Other than the fact that I don 't care for a sweet wine ( long ago and far away...I fought the Duck ..and the Duck won...not to mention...Lambrusco, Reunite, Boones Farm and Mateus...hey I was young and poor...don't judge)..I line dry red wine. SU and I will often buy a bottle because the label is unusual or amusing...and did you know that Newman's Own has Wine ?...And it's not bad..
Anyhoo....this picture is a trifecta of sorts..things I love, amusing and something that I can now appreciate having had the first decent nights sleep ( God Bless A/C) in more than a month.

Guess Who

Isn't he cute !

I am a super happy girl because we got the A/C-Heat replaced at he house today. I have been dying to post about this whole expensive, depressing adventure but me being me, I was afraid that I would somehow jinx the whole thing.

The heat part of it went out a few years ago and we didn't really mind because we live in Texas....yeah...tho I have to admit this year when the temps got way the f cold..it bothered us. GOOD space heaters and my wonderful fireplace were fine for the most part.

BUT NO A/C ?

OH HELL NO !

It was very humid this past weekend to the point of " Oh please let it rain"..but nope. Jere Lee and Cindy and I went out to an early supper since SU was playing golf with the Moron and when I left out house....at 3:30...it was already 80 degrees in the living room.

Besides my perpetual state of hot flash..this is not good for the kittehs, especially Miss Xena..she of the delicate constitution..so I am now a broke but happy girl.

SU stayed home on Presidents day and got all of the bids and dealt with all of that ( way the hell above my pay grade) and was there at home today as it all went in.

Thank you honey for taking care of this whole ordeal,,,I appreciate it , I really do.
